St Paul's Cathedral

604

The first cathedral dedicated to St Paul's is built on the site by Mellitus, Bishop of the East Saxons.

In 604, the first Christian cathedral dedicated to St Paul was built on the site, for Mellitus, Bishop of the East Saxons. This first wooden building burned down in 675 and was rebuilt 10 years later, only to be destroyed by Vikings in 962. A new church was then built in stone.
