Blue Christmas

Christmas in difficult times

Christmas is so often seen as a time of happy families coming together and of bright jollity. This year, amongst all the losses and restrictions of the COVID pandemic, the expectations being put upon Christmas seem greater than ever, filling many of us with a sense of dread. For many people, this year has been so hard, and it has been full of losses.

Many of us are bereaved – there is an empty chair where once a loved one has sat. For others of us, this empty chair represents other losses. Many of us have lost relationships, the companionship of others, our health, our job, money, security, freedom, our sense of purpose and direction, or other aspects of ourselves and of our past lives.

The prospect of Christmas can highlight the anguish of these losses and we invite you to join us for this filmed reflection for Christmas in difficult times:

If you would like to visit your local church for private prayer, reflection or a service this Advent and Christmas, you can find details on A Church Near You

Some churches offer Blue Christmas services and we are aware of the following services taking place:

  • St James’s, Piccadilly: Sunday 13 December at 3pm
  • St Giles’, Cripplegate: Monday 21 December at 6:30-7.30pm. Please register online to attend this service. It will also be livestreamed and available to watch later.

Remember Me

In May 2020, St Paul’s launched Remember Me, an online book of remembrance for those who have died as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK. Every person is valued and worthy of remembrance, and if someone you love or care for has died as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, you are encouraged to remember them on this site. You can visit and add a memorial here.

Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
