Announcing work has begun to install a Changing Places toilet in our Crypt
Starting in January, the project to install this specialist accessibility toilet in the Crypt is estimated to be completed in Spring this year.
A CPT is fitted with the equipment required for people who cannot use a standard accessible toilet, including a WC, ceiling hoist, basin, adult-sized changing bench, and optional shower. The facility is expected to open in April 2026.
We currently have two traditional accessibility toilets, and this new facility goes a step further in providing space, safety, and comfort for people with complex needs and their carers in public places. In 2020, as part of our widely commended Equal Access Project, seamless step-free access to the building was built at the North Transept, and officially opened in 2022.
During construction, disruption to visitors and staff will be minimal and carefully managed.
Rebecca Thompson, Director of Property at St Paul’s Cathedral, commented:
“At St Paul’s Cathedral, we are proud to welcome everyone through our doors and are committed to making our building accessible for all. A Changing Places Toilet provides a safe and dignified space for visitors with complex needs, making a real difference to the lives of those who critically need these facilities.
“We are installing a Changing Places facility within the Cathedral to be a part of that positive change, ensuring every visitor can be included in the vibrant life of the Cathedral.”
