'Grand simplicity' of St Paul's scoops photography competition top prize

An image which exquisitely shows a detail within St Paul's has won the #SurpriseStPauls photography competition.

Cath Dupuy's image of one of the Cathedral's chandeliers wowed head judge Sandy Nairne, outgoing Director of the National Portrait Gallery.

In his citation, he said: "This is a delightful image of a simple but grand element of St Paul's - one of the many chandeliers that distribute light across the Cathedral floor, when dark surrounds the great building. Part of the surprise is that after so many centuries, the structure and curving lines of this chandelier look so strong and so contemporary."

Cath will now enjoy four prizes:

  • A behind-the-scenes tour of the Cathedral for six people, led by Oliver Caroe, who holds the title of Surveyor to the Fabric of St Paul's, a position held by Sir Christopher Wren
  • Dinner for six at the Grange St Paul's Hotel, which boasts fabulous unobstructed views of the Cathedral, where they will enjoy a Traditional Hibachi Dinner or Benihana Specialties Dinner
  • Her photograph to go on display in the main reception of the newly-restored Cathedral Chapter House
  • Her image to be featured on the @London Instagram account, which boasts more than 1.1 million followers

Sandy Nairne also wished to praise two other images from the short list of 12

The Surprise St Paul's competition came after St Paul’s launched its brand new online donation system, which offers users the chance to choose what area of Cathedral life to which they would like to donate, whether that be the Cathedral fabric, conservation or choir.

The Cathedral wishes to thank Grange St Paul’s Hotel for kindly offering part of the competition prize.
