Installation of the Revd Canon Michael Hampel as Precentor

Canon Hampel was educated at Stratford-upon-Avon, Durham, and Cambridge, and was ordained in Durham Cathedral in 1993 to serve as Assistant Curate of Whitworth with St Paul, Spennymoor.
He was then appointed Minor Canon, Precentor and Sacrist of Durham Cathedral until 2002 when he became Senior Tutor of St Chad's College in the University of Durham. Michael was appointed Residentiary Canon and Precentor of St Edmundsbury Cathedral in 2004, becoming also Sub-Dean in 2008 and Acting Dean in 2009. He has acted and directed in amateur theatre most of his life; in the North East, he had a long association with the Air Training Corps; and, more recently, was Vice-Chair of Governors of King Edward VI Upper School in Bury St Edmunds.
As Precentor at St Paul’s, Canon Hampel has responsibility for music and liturgy at the cathedral.
