Filming at St Paul's

TV and film producers and professional photographers, here’s everything you need to know about filming and photography at St Paul’s.

St Paul’s Cathedral is one of the most well-known buildings in London, and has been featured in a number of much-loved feature films, including Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes and Mary Poppins.

We welcome enquiries from news and documentary crews, TV productions and feature films looking to shoot at St Paul’s. Read on to find out how to apply to film at St Paul’s and who to contact.

Documentary and news filming

As the Cathedral church of the Diocese of London, and an architectural masterpiece with centuries of history, St Paul’s Cathedral has plenty of stories to tell. We have welcomed documentary and news crews from BBC, ITV, PBS and more.

To apply for permission to film at St Paul’s, please download and return a completed filming application form to the Press Office on press@stpaulscathedral.org.uk.

Please note this a request to film, and not a filming permit. If we can facilitate your filming, we will get in touch to arrange contracts and location fees.

To allow us to fully consider your request, we ask you contact us at least six weeks’ ahead of your proposed shoot date. We consider each application that we receive, and prioritise requests that focus on the work, mission and history of St Paul’s Cathedral.

To discuss filming including short notice news filming, please contact the Press Office on email press@stpaulscathedral.org.uk or on telephone +44 (0)207 246 8321.

TV and feature filming

With our atmospheric crypt, imposing portico and iconic dome, St Paul’s has served as the striking backdrop for a number of cherished feature films:

  • The spiral Geometric Staircase appeared in two Harry Potter movies.
  • The West Steps have welcomed both Sherlock Holmes and Mary Poppins Returns.
  • The roof and side of the building were scaled by Tom Cruise during Mission Impossible 6.
  • The Cathedral Floor, Geometric Staircase and Whispering Gallery saw dramatic scenes with master criminal Phoenix Buchanan (Hugh Grant) in Paddington 2.
  • The Nave and Quire appeared in Wonka, with added giraffes!

We have extensive experience working with professional film crews, and would love to speak to those looking to utilise our unique building.

To discuss large scale filming and to arrange a recce, please contact the Press Office on email press@stpaulscathedral.org.uk or on telephone +44 (0)207 246 8321.
