Dame Mary Berry visits the Cathedral to film BBC Christmas special

In December last year we had the pleasure of welcoming Dame Mary Berry to the Cathedral to film part of her Christmas special, ‘A Mary Berry Christmas’.

Ahead of her role as a reader in A Celebration of Christmas that evening, Dame Mary joined three of our Choristers – Anastasia, Buchi and Hugo – to share some chocolate tarts she baked earlier in the programme and chat to them about the Christmas concert.

Mary spoke to Hugo about how he was feeling before his solo in ‘Once in Royal David’s City’, and admitted she was nervous about her reading too, asking for the Choristers’ advice. Buchi encouraged her to imagine she was “telling a story to children in a library,” and Anastasia told her to “keep [her] head up and say things confidently.”

After her chat with the Choristers, Mary delivered her reading at the Celebration of Christmas: a poem titled “Recipe for Christmas All Year Long” by Joanna Fuchs. We think it’s safe to say the Choristers’ help paid off.

This wasn’t Mary’s only contribution to Christmas at St Paul’s, however. Earlier on that month, she also headed to Windsor Great Park to pick out one of this year’s Christmas trees for inside the Cathedral.

It was a delight to welcome Dame Mary to the Cathedral, and we hear the chocolate tarts were thoroughly enjoyed.

If you’d like to catch up on the programme, you can find ‘A Mary Berry Christmas’ on BBC iPlayer.
