Jeremiah Stephenson appointed Associate Organist at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue
In his new role, Jeremiah will be the principal organist for services, concerts, recordings and broadcasts, and will also contribute to the church’s expanding education work and wider community engagement.
Saint Thomas Church is an Episcopal parish church of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. The church has a residential boys’ choir who sing five services a week, as well as a mixed treble line who sing every Sunday, and an annual Girl Choristers' course.
On his new appointment, Jeremiah said:
“It is hard to believe that I only started as Organ Education Lead at St Paul's three years ago when I reflect on the sheer number of children we have welcomed to the Cathedral for our various events. I inherited the "Organ Day" model from my predecessor Tom Daggett (now Director of Music at Sheffield Cathedral, where I started my musical journey as a chorister). I have had the great pleasure of continuing this work and expanding it to include secondary schools and a focused day of study for young aspiring organists.
“As a performer with a busy schedule of international concerts and collaborative work outside the Cathedral, it’s been a delight to see children experiencing the range and power of the Grand Organ for the first time. It never fails to elicit a strong emotional response from Year 3 through to Year 13 (and the accompanying teachers)! I believe this work is essential for future generations to engage with the musical tradition of the Cathedral and classical music more generally, and I look forward to seeing it and the wider Choral Partnership programme continue to flourish.
“I am extremely grateful to Will Bruce for his guidance and encouragement as I took on this kind of advocacy and education work for the first time and the support from teams across the Cathedral in making all these events happen.
“I know that these skills and experiences I have gained from working here will stand me in good stead for my new role.”
Many congratulations to Jeremiah on this new appointment – we wish him all the best as he begins this new chapter of his musical career.
