St Paul’s appears on BBC’s Songs of Praise ahead of VE Day celebrations

In anticipation of the 80th anniversary of VE Day this May, BBC’s Songs of Praise paid a visit to the Cathedral to explore our role in the Second World War and the celebrations that marked the end of the conflict in Europe on 8th May 1945.

Presenter Pam Rhodes spoke to our Dean, Andrew Tremlett, about how St Paul’s became a beacon of hope throughout the war.

“It was a very special place, not just for its religious heritage, but for what it symbolised in the fight against tyranny and oppression. And on this 80th anniversary, it’s a very special place to be, simply for the fact that it was preserved, miraculously,” he told Pam.

Andrew also explained how the Cathedral was saved by the brave members of the St Paul’s Watch who extinguished fires from the incendiary bombs that threatened our timber frame, a story we have been spotlighting in this anniversary year with our outdoor exhibition, ‘Saving St Paul’s: The Watch and the Second World War’.

Our feature in the episode ended with our choir performing “Lord, for the years” under a dimly lit Dome. You can watch the full episode here.
