Lift out of action

Become a Chorister

Being a Chorister is an inspiring experience, and gives children a unique start in life. As part of our Cathedral Choir, Choristers perform around the globe and gain a first-class academic education and boarding at the Cathedral School.

Life as a Chorister

Our Choristers sing Choral Evensong most days during term time, as well as Choral Mattins and Sung Eucharist on Sunday morning. They also take part in special services, broadcasts, concerts and tours. Alongside singing, children learn the piano and a second instrument with our specialist teachers.

Beyond their music lessons, Choristers follow a full school curriculum – both academic and sporting – at St Paul's Cathedral school, where they board and are well supported by staff.

Our pupils often go on to win major scholarships to leading schools throughout the country. In their first probationary year, Choristers are introduced to choir life and build strong musical skills before taking a full part in the Cathedral’s worship and music.

Who can apply

We're looking for children who:

Are currently in Years 3 or 4 (boys) or Year 3 (girls)
Enjoy singing and can pitch notes when played on a piano (no formal training needed)
Are happy to board full-time in London (but can come from anywhere in the UK)
Show enthusiasm, curiosity and potential.
Please note that Choristers must also meet the entry requirements of St Paul's Cathedral School.

Come along to our next information session on Tuesday 10th March at 6pm to find out more.

How to apply

Auditions take place throughout the year, and are designed to help us get to know your child in a relaxed and supportive way.

  1. Come to an online information session.

Children and parents are invited to an online information session where you'll learn a song together, meet our Choristers, and enjoy a virtual tour of our Cathedral and school.

The next online session is on Tuesday 10th March at 6pm. We’re currently inviting applications from boys in years 3 and 4, and girls in year 3.

  2. Learn a song at home.

Your child can choose one of the two songs from the video below and practice at home using the backing track.

  3. Attend an informal meeting

After the online session, children are invited to a friendly, informal meeting where they'll sing their chosen song. They can use words or sing from memory. If they play an instrument, they can play that too, but it's not expected.

  4. Formal audition

The formal audition is very similar with some simple listening and rhythm games. No preparation is needed. We'll also meet parents and carers to talk through boarding and bursaries.

If you have any questions about the application process or life as a Chorister, please email choristerrecruitment@stpaulscathedral.org.uk and book into the next information session below.
