Illuminated manuscripts – written by hand, decorated with intricate illustrations, and embellished with shimmering gold and silver – were used for centuries in both churches and the secular world.

Join us in this creative workshop to explore how artists today can adapt and reinterpret this beautiful, historic technique. Learn from the artist Judy Hurst and create your own artwork, using traditional methods to bring your design to life.

In this workshop, you will create an artwork inspired by illuminated manuscripts, embellished with 24-carat gold leaf.

Judy Hurst is a Durham-based artist whose intricate, vividly coloured illuminated vellum works draw inspiration from the patterns found in nature, from microscopic structures to vast celestial systems. Working intuitively, she creates richly detailed compositions that explore the interconnectedness of life while inviting viewers into immersive, contemplative worlds. Hurst has exhibited internationally, and her work is held in both public and private collections worldwide.
