Sir Peter Estlin appointed of Chair of St Paul’s Cathedral Council

9 November 2021

St Paul's Cathedral is pleased to announce the appointment by the Bishop of London of Sir Peter Estlin as Chair of the Cathedral Council, in succession to Sir Roger Gifford who sadly died in office in May.

Following a 35 year career in banking and finance with Barclays, Citigroup and Coopers & Lybrand in London, New York, Hong Kong and Singapore, Peter became the 691st Lord Mayor of the City of London in 2018/19. His mayoral theme was “Shaping Tomorrow’s City Today”; promoting innovation alongside championing digital skills and social inclusion.

Peter currently holds several non-executive appointments including being an independent director of Rothschild & Co, Chair of FutureDotNow, a coalition of businesses and organisations working together to boost digital skills across the UK, Chair of the Association of Apprentices, a national membership body for apprentices in the UK, and a member of the Audit & Risk Committee of HM Treasury. He is also a trustee of Trust for London, Morden College and of the St Paul’s Cathedral Chorister Trust, having previously served as a Commissioner on the London Fairness Commission.

The Cathedral Council is not the principal governing board of the Cathedral (which is the Cathedral Chapter), but is a body of senior advisers who meet three times a year to support its work and have an overview of the Chapter's stewardship of St Paul's.

The appointment is for a limited term as the current Cathedral Council will cease to exist when St Paul's comes under the regulation of the Charity Commission in 2022.

The Dean, the Very Revd David Ison, said:

'We are very pleased to have Sir Peter as our new Chair of Council. Sir Peter brings wide experience of the City and of governance, as well as knowledge of the Cathedral through his membership of the Chorister Trust. We are grateful to Sir Peter for his time and experience helping us bring in further governance reforms under the 2021 Cathedrals Measure.'

Sir Peter Estlin said

'I am delighted to be appointed as Chair of Cathedral Council at St Paul’s, as well as continuing my work with the Chorister Trust. It is a wonderful opportunity to work closely with the staff and other council members to contribute to the stewardship of St Paul’s Cathedral for all, now and into the future.;
