A welcome from the Dean
We began with a welcome from Andrew, in which he thanked everyone for their warm welcome since his arrival, and for helping him to settle in and get to know the Cathedral.
2023 vision and priorities
Continuing the recovery
- We have achieved great things and are well ahead of where we thought we would be. Let’s keep on doing what we’re doing!
Developing our people
- The Cathedral is nothing without its people – us. We need to focus on our people; our development and how we achieve what we’ve set out to do
- We have some key appointments: Our new COO Emily Mackenzie will start in January, and with Nicky Wynne (Director of Development) leaving at the end of the year, Martin Fletcher (Clerk of the Works) retiring next year, and Simon Larter-Evans (School Head) leaving soon, we have some key appointments to make.
15-year fabric plan and development campaign
- We need to connect our long-term fabric plan for the Cathedral with a development campaign to fund it. As our day-to-day finances become more secure, but we need to develop a long-term plan for the care of the building.
Girls’ Voices
- This is not just about doing the right thing, but making sure our opportunities are equal for boys and girls. This is a long-term project, but we need to prepare the way so that when girl choristers arrive at the Cathedral in 2024/25 that the culture is right to welcome and support them.
School Foundation
- In 2023, the Cathedral School will become a separate entity, albeit still with a very close relationship. Andrew will remain as Vice Chair and members of Chapter will still be appointed to the governing body, but the School will become a self-governing body.
These are just some highlights for 2023; no one person or team will be able to achieve these alone. We will be working together across teams and departments to bring these to fruition. Our vision for the Cathedral – the big picture - is an ongoing, collaborative process we all need to own – what we believe St Paul’s is all about.
Keeping us all safe
These will be standing agenda items for All Staff meetings, covering safeguarding, security and health and safety.
Safeguarding
An update from Louise Wilcox, Safeguarding Officer:
- Safeguarding training has been completed online during the pandemic, but face-to-face training will return next year. If you have been asked to complete basic and foundation level training online then please do so, but we will be in touch next year – targeting departments in turn to ask teams to come in and complete training in person. Please be patient as we work through this process.
- Louise will also start to attend team meetings on a regular basis and will be in touch to arrange this
- Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. If you have any safeguarding concerns, please contact Louise, Canon Neil Evans, who is safeguarding lead for the Cathedral, the Chaplain, HR, your manager, or download the form from our website or from the S-Drive. In the rare event you cannot reach any of those colleagues or teams, please contact the Canon in Residence: please don’t try and deal with any issues alone – talk to someone.
Security
An update from Adrian Wells, Head of Security and Resilience:
- A reminder that the UK threat level remains at substantial, which means an attack likely somewhere in the UK
- Our security teams work hard every single day to keep us all safe. Thank you to Charlie and the Bidvest team who work so hard, especially outside in the cold weather at the moment.
- The security team together with Bidvest have been working hard on the worshipper and visitor welcome over the past few weeks
- Next year’s focus will be on a Business Resilience Plan, and working with Kelly Hemmise, our Counter Terrorism Advisor for the City of London Police, on new ‘protect duty’ laws coming into effect next year as a result of the Manchester Arena bombings in 2017
- There will be ACT (Action Counters Terrorism) awareness training for all new staff and refresher training for all current staff, and Adrian will be continuing to share best practice and running exercises on fire and resilience next year.
- Finally a message from the police: Please be vigilant with your phones and laptops in the area around the Cathedral (including cafes and pubs in the vicinity), as this is a theft hotspot.
Health and safety
An update from Joanne Day, Acting Chief Operating Officer, on behalf of Sharon Raynham, Health and Safety Officer:
- Fire safety and prevention: We will be running some practice scenario exercises next year with the London Fire Brigade.
- We also need to make sure everyone is trained and knows their roles and responsibilities in the event of a fire at the Cathedral so will be starting to run training next year from January (including health and safety). Sharon will be in touch about how we roll that out.
- Please contact Sharon with any health and safety concerns or queries
