Guided Tours

As well as the multimedia guides offered for your use, the Cathedral has a team of knowledgeable guides with many years of experience.


Introductory Talk (No extra cost above admission)
A 15-20 minute introduction to the history and architecture of the Cathedral.

Monday - Saturday Talks run regularly throughout the day
Please enquire at the guiding desk when you arrive

Guided Tours (No extra cost above admission)
A 90-minute guided tour in English taking-in the Cathedral floor and crypt, as well as Geometric Staircase, Chapel of St Michael & St George and the Quire - areas not usually open to visitors. 

Monday - Saturday 10am  |  11am  |  1pm  |  2pm
Please reserve a place at the guiding desk when you arrive. The above is a typical schedule and there may be day to day variations. 

Group Guided Tours
Cathedral guides are available for the same 90-minute tour in English on a private group basis at a small additional cost per person. A minimum number of 10 people is required and tours must be pre-booked. 

Group guided tours can usually start at the following times 10.15am  |  11.15am  |  1.15pm  |  2.15pm
  £5 per person (on top of general ticket price)

Triforium Tour - public bookings
A one-hour tour in English which includes the library*, Geometric Staircase and Great Model, as well as a spectacular view down the nave from above the Great West Doors. The cathedral will offer public Triforium Tours (no minimum party number required to book and you will be with other visitors on the tour) on the following dates:

* Please note that the library will be closed for refurbishments from the beginning of August 2018 for 18-24 months. The tour will not enter the library and extra time will be allocated elsewhere.

Please be aware that there are 141 steps to the Triforium level and no lift access available at present. Within the Triforium, the tour route includes up to a further 10 short flights of stairs (each no more than 10 steps).

Triforium Tour - private group bookings
A one-hour tour in English for a party of minimum 5 people, and maximum 15 (sometimes we can accommodate two simultaneous tours thereby increasing the maximum to 30), which includes the library*, Geometric Staircase and Great Model, as well as a spectacular view down the nave from above the Great West Doors. Tours generally available from the following schedule:

A two-hour tour in English of the cathedral floor and crypt which is suitable for people with vision impairments.

UK School Visits

A range of guided visits are available and must be pre-booked through the Schools & Families department.
