Marsh Awards

Marsh Volunteer Awards with St Paul’s Cathedral

Making a difference at the heart of the city

Our annual internal awards

These Awards celebrate volunteers across St Paul’s Cathedral who make invaluable contributions to daily Cathedral life.

In partnership with the Marsh Charitable Trust, we will offer Individual Awards of £250 and Group Awards of £500 each year. The award money is generously being provided by the Marsh Charitable Trust.

Volunteers in any role or department can be nominated for the Awards and we encourage nominations for those volunteers who have made an especially notable contribution to their role and the wider Cathedral community.

When nominating, we encourage you to share your volunteer’s story and describe how they have proven themselves committed to their role at the Cathedral.

Frequently asked questions

Submitting a nomination

There are three ways you can nominate:

  • Online via this nomination form.
  • Handwritten hard copy nomination form - please complete and return to Chapter House Reception.
  • Audio nomination - if you prefer, you can record a verbal nomination - just answer the same questions and email the audio file to volunteering@stpaulscathedral.org.uk.

If you would like to discuss a nomination or would like help compiling a nomination, please contact me by email volunteering@stpaulscathedral.org.uk.

Our judges

The nominations will be judged by Annie McCarthy from Marsh Charitable Trust, and a member of the Cathedral community.

Timeline
  • Nominations open: Wednesday 24 July 2024
  • Nominations close: Sunday 13 October 2024
  • Awards ceremony: January 2025
Who to nominate

Firstly, you have to decide who to nominate. You are not limited to how many nominations you submit, so put a nomination for everyone you think should be recognised for their contribution.

Whether the volunteer has only recently joined us or they have been with us for many years, if they have made a difference, we want to hear about them.

Think about the people who have:

  • solved a problem introduced a new way of working that has changed the volunteering, visitor or worshipper experience for the better
  • learnt a new skill, technique or activity
  • achieved a new milestone in their role
Making a successful nomination

The key to a well-written nomination is providing the judging panel with specific information illustrating how the individual’s or group’s achievements have had a positive impact at the Cathedral.

  • Write short sentences that are concise and give specific detail. Keep it brief.
  • Support their nomination with your own observations as well as qualitative and quantitative information - tell us why your nominee deserve to win an award.
  • Provide a complete overview of the nominee’s or group’s accomplishments. It is important to tell the nominee’s story as you would to a stranger.

We have included some questions to encourage you to share as much information as possible about your nominated volunteer(s). You only need to answer the questions which relate to your volunteer(s) and the reasons that you are nominating them. The questions we are asking are:

  • Please describe the volunteer’s role at the Cathedral and which team they are involved with
  • Please describe how the volunteer has made a difference to life at the Cathedral through their role (e.g. an innovative project they have been involved in, feedback they have received from visitors)
  • Please describe how the volunteer has supported and encouraged other volunteers across the Cathedral (e.g. as a supervisor, providing mentoring support to new volunteers)
  • Please describe how the volunteer has developed in their role while at the Cathedral (e.g. undertaking additional training, overcoming personal barriers, developing in confidence)
  • Please include any additional information on how the volunteer has gone out of their way to support the Cathedral (e.g. giving extra time, taking on unpopular tasks)
Information about our Partner

The Marsh Charitable Trust was founded as a grant-making body in 1981, providing unrestricted core funding to smaller charities across the sector to assist them with their running costs.

Since 1987, the Trust has run an Award scheme with larger charitable organisations to help them celebrate and recognise the invaluable contributions that their volunteers make to their causes. Without volunteers, a lot of charities would not be able to do the incredible work that they do and the Marsh Awards always recognise those that support causes that they believe in and seek no recognition for their efforts.
