99 not out - Cathedral volunteer and cricket fan, Maurice Sills, celebrates his birthday

The entire St Paul's Cathedral community is celebrating the special birthday of one of its greatest friends.

Maurice Sills, a volunteer at St Paul's since the 1970s, turns 99-years-old today (July 28).

As well as coming to the Cathedral on most week days, the ever-sprightly Maurice still finds time to be a member of both the MCC at Lord's and Surrey County Cricket Club at the Oval.

And he remains a season ticket holder at his beloved Norwich City Football Club.

A former teacher, Maurice is especially loved within the St Paul's Cathedral School, where he spends most of his time helping in the classrooms. The affection that many pupils, both past and present, have for him can be seen in the numbers that continue to keep in touch with him.

Maurice was recently honoured by the Bishop of London, who gave him the St Mellitus medal; awarded in recognition of substantial contribution to the Christian life of London.

St Paul's often talks about its many great treasures; none are more valued than Maurice Sills. We wish him continued health and happiness.
