Dean of St Paul's the Very Revd David Ison said: 'For more than 20 years, the Right Reverend and Right Honourable Richard Chartres has exercised the role of Bishop of London with great commitment, vision, imagination and panache, and an eye for opportunity.

'He has enabled the Diocese to grow in a multitude of ways in its mission and service to London and the wider nation. His partnership in the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been inclusive in its generosity across the Christian churches and around the globe as well as here in the Diocese.

'At St Paul's we have been privileged to participate in his mission, and are delighted that his last official engagement will be here, where he was enthroned 21 years before.

'Personally, I have much enjoyed working with Bishop Richard, and will miss his friendship, learning, vision and wise counsel, his dedication to the service of Christ, his warmth and his concern for the outsider and the things that matter.

All of us at St Paul's pray for every blessing for him and his family, and for his continued fellowship in the Gospel in other ways in the future.'
